The violinist Anders Nilsson was recently named 'Young Musician of the Year' by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in recognition of his interpretation of Elgar's Violin Concerto with the orchestra last season.
The prizewinner was also awarded the Princess Astrid Music Prize in 2008, after performing a highly demanding semi finals solo programme and a strongly profiled interpretation of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
Anders Nilsson has already shown unusual versatility as a musician. He plays both violin and viola and has made his mark both as soloist, chamber musician, instructor, concert master and ensemble leader. He has studied at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin and at the Swedish Edsberg Music Institute. In the summer of 2008 he finished his studies at the Norwegian Music Academy in Oslo with 2 Diploma Concerts, performing Elgar's Violin Concerto with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with the Oslo Philharmonic.
After his debut as soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002 Anders Nilsson has performed with most Norwegian symphony orchestras. In 2006 he performed violin concertos by 7 different composers, from Bach via the great romantics to composers of today. He has won prizes at national and international competitions, and at the Bergen International Festival in 2007 he was selected for Concerts Norway's (Rikskonsertene's) launch programme INTRO Classical for 2008-2009.
As a chamber musician he has performed at numerous festivals, and he is artistic co-director of the Hardanger Music Festival. Anders Nilsson has been instrumental in starting the Finnish-Norwegian Arctia Piano Trio, which recently won the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition. He has frequently been engaged to instruct chamber orchestras, including several projects with the Trondheim Soloists. He figures prominently in the ensemble's recording 'Divertimenti', nominated for 3 Grammy Awards.
The past season Anders Nilsson has also served for periods as concert master of the Norwegian Opera Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In September 2010 he will premiere a new violin concerto with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, written for him by Terje Bjørklund.
He plays on a violin from 1714, built by Alessandro Gagliano, Naples, described by The Strad a 'a minor masterpiece'.
